Record no. MC-ADV-BRF Posted 08/03 Active after dark

Drivers are asked to remain on marked roads when crossing the flats north of Black Ridge.

A raised road crossing the reflective Black Ridge Flats at night
Raised causeway across the flats after rain. Filed with the road advisory.

Record details

Area
Flats north of Black Ridge
Hazards
Soft ground, standing water, poor distance judgment
Applies
After dark and following rain
Road status
Marked causeway remains open

Advisory

Standing water can hide soft salt mud beyond the raised road edge. A vehicle that leaves the marked causeway may be visible for a long distance and still be difficult to reach.

Reports of moving lights over the flats do not mark a road, residence, or staffed recovery point. Some reports have matched vehicles or work crews. Others have not been verified.

If stranded

  • Keep the vehicle on firm ground when possible.
  • Use hazard lights if electrical power remains.
  • Do not walk toward an unconfirmed light source.
